Hoyer Statement on Tax Day

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today on Tax Day, the filing deadline for federal and state taxes:   

“As millions of Americans complete their tax filings, we are all reminded that every taxpayer - and every American - deserves a government that is fair, honest, transparent, and effective.  Our tax code ought to reflect these values and help all of our people reach for the American Dream. It must also preserve that Dream for our children and grandchildren by adhering to the principle of fiscal discipline.   
 
“Instead, this Republican-led Congress has enacted a dangerous and partisan tax law that does little to help middle- and working-class families while giving the bulk of its benefits to corporate investors and the wealthy.  Instead of working across the aisle to achieve the kind of broad, bipartisan, fiscally responsible tax reform that American businesses and workers needed from Congress, Republicans chose to go it alone with their failed trickle-down economics despite predictions that it would slow long-term growth while adding trillions to the debt. Already, reports are confirming that this tax law is enriching corporate investors – not increasing hiring, raising wages, or growing our economy.
 
“Democrats will continue to work to ensure taxpayers benefit fairly from the funds they send to Washington each year.  All Americans deserve to have the government on their side, not just those at the very top.”
