Congressman Hoyer Meets with Small Businesses on the Impact of Health Care Reform

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5), in conjunction with local area Chambers of Commerce, today met with local small businesses to discuss the short- and long-term benefits of health insurance reform, how reform will impact them, and how they can get involved in Marylands reform implementation process. Hoyer was joined by Marie C. Johns, Deputy Administrator, Small Business Administration; Elizabeth P. Sammis, Acting Insurance Commissioner, Maryland Insurance Administration; and Terry Gardiner, National Policy Director, Small Business Majority.

Hoyer Announces Investments in Southern Maryland Transportation & Community Development

Hoyer Statement on NTSB Report on 2009 Red Line Accident

Today, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) issued the findings of its investigation of the June 22, 2009, accident involving the collision of two Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) trains that killed 9 people and injured nearly 80 others on the Red Line in Washington, D.C. NTSB determined that the probable cause of the accident was a malfunctioning of track circuits as well as Metro's failure to take appropriate measures to identify and prevent that problem.

Hoyer Announces $121,445 in Grant Funding for Maryland Agricultural Marketing Projects

Today, the U.S. Department of Agriculture announced two awards for Maryland totaling $121,445, to support agricultural market research and demonstration projects. These grants were part of $1.3 million in 22 matching grants awarded to 18 states to explore new and innovative approaches to marketing U.S. food and agricultural products and to improve the efficiency and performance of the marketing system.

UMD Receives $500,000 Federal Recovery Act Grant to Help Lower Home Cooling Costs

The U.S. Department of Energy announced the award of a $500,000 research grant for the University of Maryland to develop energy efficient cooling technologies and air conditioners (AC) this week. The grant was part of a $100 million nationwide series of American Recovery and Reinvestment Act grants to support alternative methods to help save energy and reduce green house gas emissions. Through this funding, UMD researchers will continue their efforts to replace the conventional compression technology now used in nearly every home and business.

Hoyer Supports Telework Improvements Act

Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-5) voted today in support of the Telework Improvements Act, legislation requiring Federal agencies to establish a policy to authorize employees to telework. Reps. Hoyer & Edwards Announce $3,458,682 Grant Award to Prince George’s County Fire/EMS Department

Congressman Steny Hoyer (MD-5) and Congresswoman Donna F. Edwards (MD-4), announced today that the Prince Georges County Fire/EMS Department will receive a $3,458,682 grant through the Department of Homeland Securitys (DHS) Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program (SAFER). This funding will be utilized by the County to hire an additional 24 firefighters.
