Hoyer Statement on Legislation to Fund the Government for Fiscal Year 2018

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) released the following statement today after voting against legislation to fund the government for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2018:

“The process in which the majority brought this bill to the Floor is appalling, and it is not how the House of Representatives should do its work. Forcing such a significant funding bill through the House less than twenty-four hours after it was introduced is extremely reckless and not fiscally responsible.

“That being said, I’m glad the legislation included provisions I helped secure that will be beneficial to the Fifth District. I’m glad that the legislation does not appropriate any money to the new FBI headquarters plan to demolish the Hoover Building and build a new facility on the same site. Until the Administration can explain why it decided to abruptly change course from a consolidated headquarters with a campus setting, Congress should not move forward with GSA’s new recommendation. Additionally, this legislation maintains funding for programs to clean up the Chesapeake Bay, provides funding for the Metro, and restores funding for key programs at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center.

“Marylanders deserve to know that their representatives are able to fully understand pieces of legislation before voting on them. This bill will have a significant impact on our nation’s deficits, and it is unacceptable that the majority did not allow Members more time to review it.”
