On October 7, 2023, the United States awoke to the news that Hamas terrorists had invaded and attacked Israel, killing over 1400 Israelis and 30 Americans, and taking hostage over 200 people, 13 of whom are American. Congressman Hoyer, a longtime advocate for Israel, has visited our ally 20 times, and led several trips with bipartisan groups of Members of Congress.
“Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD), the former House Democratic leader and a longtime pro-Israel champion, told Jewish Insider on Friday that he believes the level of support for Israel seen over the first week of the conflict will be durable, noting that more than 400 members are supporting a resolution supporting Israel.”
“‘Could that vary somewhat, depending on what circumstances are? I think the answer to that is, honestly, a yes,’ Hoyer continued. ‘But I think the overwhelming numbers of the House on both sides of the aisle — and I think the president spoke for most Americans saying that this evil must be defeated, and we’re going to stay the course — and I think that is the position of the House of Representatives.’”
“Hoyer also highlighted that most lawmakers on both sides of the aisle vote consistently in favor of pro-Israel legislation.”
“He noted comments by progressive lawmakers such as Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) distancing themselves from the Democratic Socialists of America, which promoted a pro-Hamas rally in New York City a day after the terrorist attack in Israel.”
“Politicians showed full-throated solidarity with Israel in the wake of what some people called Israel’s version of 9/11 or Pearl Harbor.”
“‘Jews must have the absolute right to live safely and securely in their ancestral homeland,’ Democratic U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer of Maryland said in a statement. ‘In this terrifying hour, I stand with them, and I stand with Israel as our ally does whatever it takes to protect the Israeli people and their security and sovereignty.”
“A handful of Maryland’s Democratic congressional delegation, meanwhile, spoke about Congress’ commitment to Israel.”
“‘Criminals must be called to account,’ said U.S. Rep. Steny Hoyer, the former longtime House Democratic leader from St. Mary’s County, who made his 20th trip to Israel in August.”
“Rep. Steny Hoyer, D-Maryland, said ‘we shall not be moved, Israel. We shall not be moved, America. We shall not move all those in this world who are for justice and fairness and international law. Criminals must be called to account.’”
“We are writing at a time of immense difficulty and sorrow for Israel and the Jewish people with a desire to reaffirm our support for the U.S.-Israel alliance at a moment when our ally depends on American support the most. The United States must stand ready to provide Israel with the resources she needs to defend herself, and stand by her until every hostage, including American citizens, are returned home and Hamas, Palestinian Islamic Jihad and others complicit are decisively defeated.”
