February 14, 2024

GREENBELT, MD – Today, Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD-05) announced that the 43rd Annual Black History Month Breakfast will take place on Saturday, February 17, at 8:30 a.m. at Martin's Crosswinds in Greenbelt, Maryland. This year's celebration will feature a conversation between Congressman Steny H. Hoyer, Congressman Glenn Ivey (MD-04), and special guest Cathy Hughes - founder and Chairperson of UrbanOne, Inc., the largest African-American owned and operated broadcast company in the nation. The theme of this year's Black History Month Celebration is “African-Americans and the Arts.”

“The Black History Month Breakfast continues to be a highlight of my year. For our 43rd annual event, I’m proud to come together with Black leaders from across Maryland’s Fourth and Fifth Congressional districts to elevate discussions about the impact African-American artists have made on our culture and the importance of supporting Black artists now and in the future,” said Congressman Hoyer. “I am honored to welcome Cathy Hughes to this tremendous event and I look forward to discussing Ms. Hughes’ lifelong career championing the arts, uplifting the stories of Black artists, and blazing a trail as one of America’s most successful businesswomen. I know Prince Georgians will draw inspiration and strength from her powerful story, just as I have.”

“Black History is American History. And a successful entrepreneur like Cathy Hughes is an American inspiration not only to women and Black folks but to everyone.  And to be part of this 43rd Annual Black History Breakfast hosted by Congressman Steny Hoyer who is, likewise, a force of nature and a leader for all Marylanders and Americans is truly my honor. I respect and admire both these extraordinary leaders in their fields who have strived to highlight the contributions in arts and business of the African American community and beyond. So, I applaud this great choice of Cathy Hughes to speak with the assembled and share her unique insights,” said Congressman Ivey.

“It is with sincere humility and gratitude that I am joining the 43rd Annual Black History Month Celebration that Congressman Steny Hoyer has conducted for over four decades,” said Cathy Hughes. “To share some time with the 4th and 5th Congressional District Leadership is an honor that I’m really looking forward to and very excited about.”

Congressman Hoyer has brought together community leaders, elected officials, and Fifth District residents at the Black History Month Breakfast each year for more than four decades to celebrate the many achievements of Black Marylanders and Americans. Past speakers at the event include Vice President Kamala Harris, former President Barack Obama, Congressman John Lewis, Congressman Elijah E. Cummings, Governor Wes Moore, Director of the Smithsonian Institution Secretary Lonnie Bunch, and Librarian of Congress Carla Hayden.
