Design and Right-of-Way Acquisition for a new interchange at MD5 @ Brandywine Road and MD 373, Prince George's County, MD Request: $10,000,000 Maryland Department of Transportation 7201 Corporate Center Drive, Hanover, MD 21076
Funding would be utilized toward design and right-of-way acquisition associated with construction of a new interchange at MD 5, MD 373 and Brandywine Road in order to close the two at grade signalized intersections. The purpose of this project is to provide relief to the public from the congestion along MD 5 at the intersections of MD 373 (Accokeek Road) and Brandywine Road in Prince George's County. Preliminary Engineering of MD 4, MD2/4 to MD 235, including the Thomas Johnson Memorial Bridge, Calvert and St. Mary's Counties, MD Request: $28,125,000 Maryland Department of Transportation 7201 Corporate Center Drive, Hanover, MD 21076 The MD 4 project extends from east of MD 235, near FDR Boulevard in St. Mary's County to north of the MD 2 tie-in near Solomons Island in Calvert County, and includes the Thomas Johnson Bridge, a distance of approximately 4.1 miles. The purpose of the project is to complete preliminary engineering associated with improving existing capacity and traffic operations, and increasing vehicular and pedestrian safety along MD 4 while supporting existing and planned development in the area. Reconstruction of the MD 261 Bridge over Fishing Creek, Calvert County, MD Request: $6,000,000 Maryland Department of Transportation 7201 Corporate Center Drive, Hanover, MD 21076 Funding would be used to construct a higher, wider bridge over Fishing Creek. The MD 261 Bridge over Fishing Creek is structurally deficient. The project would upgrade the under clearance and provide 2 additional lanes to accommodate turning vehicles. Design, Engineering, and Construction of the Purple Line, Montgomery and Prince George's County, MD Request: $1,200,000,000 (New Start Authorization) Maryland Department of Transportation 7201 Corporate Center Drive, Hanover, MD 21076 The Purple Line, a proposed 16-mile light rail or bus rapid transit line in the State of Maryland suburban area of Washington, D.C., extending from Bethesda in Montgomery County to New Carrollton in Prince George's County, is currently in the project planning stage, with the Federally required combined Alternatives Analysis and Draft Environmental Impact Statement (AA/DEIS) having undergone public hearings in the Fall of 2008. Maryland MTA is preparing a recommendation for a locally preferred alternative (LPA) and is concurrently developing an application for New Starts funding. With FTA approval and sufficient funding the project could be ready for construction in 2012. Southern Maryland Commuter Bus & Bus Facilities Program Request: $5,000,000 Maryland Department of Transportation 7201 Corporate Center Drive, Hanover, MD 21076 The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA Maryland) provides Section 5309 funds supporting a program of improvements in Southern Maryland to relieve congestion by enhancing peak period transit service for commuters. Funding supports planning, design and construction of new and expanded commuter parking lots in Charles, St. Mary's and Calvert Counties, Maryland, as well as acquisition of over-the-road coaches allowing MTA Maryland to contract with private operators to meet rapidly growing demand for commuter bus service in Southern Maryland. Transportation Alternatives Analysis for the Southern Maryland US301/Route 5 Corridor Request: $5,000,000 Maryland Department of Transportation 7201 Corporate Center Drive, Hanover, MD 21076 This project will study the feasibility for transit options in Southern Maryland. The area continues to experience sustained suburbanization, serving as a bedroom community for major regional employment centers in greater Washington, including Andrews Air Force Base in Prince George's County, Maryland. Waldorf, in Charles County, Maryland and 23 miles South-Southeast of Washington, is already experiencing some of the worst gridlock conditions in the State. Reducing vehicle miles traveled will have a positive effect on vehicle accident and death rates in the heavily traveled US 301/MD 5 corridor between White Plains, Charles County, Maryland and the existing Branch Avenue Metro Station located just inside the Capital Beltway. Construction of Roadway/Intersection Improvements in the Vicinity of Andrews Air Force Base, Prince George's County, MD Request: $30,000,000 Maryland Department of Transportation 7201 Corporate Center Drive, Hanover, MD 21076 Funds would be used for design, right-of-way or construction of intersection improvements at key locations along access routes to Andrews Air Force Base. Installation and Retrofitting of Equipment at Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority's Vehicle Maintenance and Administration Facilities Request: $20,800,000 Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) 600 Fifth Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001 The request will support Metro's "sustainability" initiatives. The projects selected for this initiative will focus on greenhouse gas reduction and energy efficiency at Metro facilities, which will have a positive impact on the region's carbon footprint as well as reducing Metro's operating costs over the long term. Projects include installation of solar panels on top of selected facilities and retrofitting selected facilities with equipment and system improvements to achieve dramatic reductions in energy and water use. Construction of Bus Facilities, Washington Metropolitan Transit Authority Request: $212,000,000 Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA) 600 Fifth Street, NW, Washington, DC 20001 The request will replace WMATA's oldest bus facilities. Half of WMATA-owned bus garages were built before 1950, and some of the oldest were converted trolley barns, one of which dates from 1907. New bus facilities would help meet the National Capital Region's future mobility needs through expansion of regional bus services and would be designed to address current operating and capital issues. The projects will be LEED-certified and include environmental improvements, such as more efficient heating, ventilation, and lighting systems to reduce power demand and emissions, create a cleaner, healthier work environment for employees, and save capital and operating costs. Construction of the 11th Street Bridge, Washington, D.C. Request: $74,000,000 District of Columbia Department of Transportation 2000 14th Street, N.W., 6th Floor, Washington, DC 20009 These funds will be used for construction to replace deficient infrastructure and roadway design. The 11th Street Bridges are twin bridges that serve as vital regional and local link between the east and west side of the Anacostia River. Together, they connect I-295 to I-395 and link regional traffic through the eastern sections of the District of Columbia to the United States Capitol and the downtown core. The bridges also provide a vital connection for local traffic between the residential areas in and around Anacostia, and the commercial and government center of the city. Construction of the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge, Washington, D.C. Request: $280,000,000 District of Columbia Department of Transportation 2000 14th Street, N.W., 6th Floor, Washington, DC 20009 The existing Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge on South Capitol Street is one of the most important bridge structures and one of the most widely used bridges in Washington, DC and carries an estimated 74,000 commuters across the river daily. The new bridge will spark the transformation of the South Capitol Street Corridor and create a monumental gateway to the Nation's capitol. The replacement of this structurally deficient bridge will improve access to the planned relocation of the Department of Homeland Security on the St. Elizabeth's campus and enhance homeland security in the Capitol region by improving the connectivity of vital, local military and federal installations. Planning and Reconstruction of Dower House Road between MD 4 and Foxley Road, Prince George's County, MD Request: $6,400,000 Prince George's County, Maryland 14741 Governor Oden Bowie Drive, Upper Marlboro, Maryland 20772-3050 Maryland Department of Transportation 7201 Corporate Center Drive Hanover, MD 21076 The pending BRAC-related expansion of Andrews Air Force Base will significantly alter the volume and type of traffic patterns on Dower House Road, including increased commercial truck traffic at the Pearl Harbor Gate. The existing roadway is of rural construction, with one narrow lane in each direction. The roadway is in major need of reconstruction to handle not only the increased volume of traffic, but the heavier weight of the anticipated base truck traffic as well. Continuation of the Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination Initiative Request: $25,000,000 University of Maryland College Park, MD 20742 Maryland Department of Transportation 7201 Corporate Center Drive Hanover, MD 21076 Funding will be utilized to plan and implement a combination of operational enhancements through the Metropolitan Area Transportation Operations Coordination (MATOC) partnership that improves emergency response / evacuation time, traffic management across jurisdictions, and reduces congestion and carbon emissions. MATOC is a partnership between the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), the Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority (WMATA), the National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board at the Metropolitan Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG), the University of Maryland, and the University of Minnesota. Transportation Infrastructure Improvements in the vicinity of Doctors Community Hospital on Good Luck Road and Hanover Parkway, Lanham Maryland Request: $1,500,000 Doctors Community Hospital 8118 Good Luck Road, Lanham, MD 20706 Maryland Department of Transportation 7201 Corporate Center Drive Hanover, MD 21076 Funding will be used to rehabilitate, engineer and implement infrastructure improvements including new sidewalks, cross walks, curb cuts, landscaping and traffic control devices in the vicinity of Doctors Community Hospital on Good Luck Road and Hanover Parkway in Lanham, Maryland. The project will include improved traffic flow and safety on the streets around the hospital.
